My "Bug" List

The windows in the Rawlings ground floor bathroom let air through their gaps making the
bathroom freezing in the cold.
bathroom freezing in the cold.
- This is because the building is really old and the costs to fix it up simply aren’t worth it because they are tearing down the building at years end.
The AC has to be set super high and cold because of mold potentially growing in the building,
specifically on the ground floor.
specifically on the ground floor.
- This is because the building is really old and needs to be replaced by a new building.
The lack of coverings over many of the bike racks here on campus results in ruined bicycles.
- The university doesn’t see the cost of protecting students' bikes as directly important to its own well being. Thus, it goes overlooked.
There is a lack of student “Red 1” parking anywhere close to the Heavener side of campus.
- We have a lack of space on campus. A solution would be to obtain funding and build a parking garage over the parking spaces between Little Hall and the Hough Graduate School of Business.
There is a lack of paper “to-go” cups at Broward Dining.
- The University of Florida is trying to cut down on all waste and this is one way to do it.
Bike pumps/ fixing stations on campus are so weathered that the air pumps do not correctly lock
onto the bikes.
onto the bikes.
- Leaving anything outside shortens its lifetime exponentially. The same is true of the tips on the air pumps.
We don’t seek to impactfully help others like the homeless, like getting warm blankets for them
in this cold weather.
in this cold weather.
- We, as students, are more focused on ourselves than the needs of others. We’ve made life all about our own fulfillment and happiness.
We don’t strongly encourage students to serve the Gainesville community, and thus, don’t get
many people involved in service projects.
many people involved in service projects.
- This is because we don’t advertise opportunities like the “Day of Service” event which is on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The idea of actually serving others in a practical way isn’t as popular as the idea that we “should” help others. We should have widespread school-sponsored day events to help those in need.
University McDonalds has beyond slow dining-in service time from 9:00pm to 12:00am.
- This is because the store employees get tired from working long shifts and the lack of motivation within the store’s environment, leading to low work productivity.
The Rawlings hallways always have a strange, gross smell like that of dirty laundry.
- This is because the building is really old and the costs to make it lovely simply aren’t worth it because they are tearing down the building at years end.
The food in the dining halls is nearly the same all the time creating a lack of variety.
- I couldn’t find a reasonable answer to why this exists. It is potentially due to the costs of a changing inventory list and the added hassle of getting off their set system of operation.
The exterior Rawlings windows are filthy, affecting the view or campus from the inside looking out.
- This is because the building is really old and the costs to preserve its beauty simply aren’t worth it because they are tearing down the building at years end.
The juice machine at Broward dining is always empty, giving out juice water instead of juice.
- I also couldn’t find an answer to why this exists. (Potential because not enough people drink juice?)
Most scholarship money goes to people who don’t really “need” it to attend college.
- None needs-based scholarships and academically based scholarships are great but many of the recipients could afford to pay for college without them. Statistically speaking, students with wealthier families do better in school and on standardized tests than students with families who need that money to send their kids to school.
It bothers me how many people are unaware of the true brutality of the Civil Rights Era and how
bad the times really were in the South.
bad the times really were in the South.
- This is because we don’t teach the full truth in the story of the hatred against the African American community in our pre-college history classes, especially in the South. It looks really bad on the South how bad the 1900s were, so it’s easier to avoid showing just how bad it was.
A majority of people aren’t happy or positive anymore and walk around wearing fake smiles.
- This is because we live in a social media-driven world where people portray their life’s highlights as the norm. Generation Z has become too obsessed with ourselves and what others think about us. It’s no wonder we find students unhappy.
Many students do not wash their hands in bathrooms leaving disgusting germs everywhere.
- Students like these are either too lazy to wash their hands or haven’t been taught how important this is to protect themselves and others from harmful viruses and diseases.
There are many sidewalks that uneven due to cracks making it difficult for wheeled transportation
like wheelchairs to travel on them.
like wheelchairs to travel on them.
- These paths have been forced upward by tree roots and other natural causes yet aren’t high enough on the university’s priority list of problems to be dealt with.
There are very few trash cans located throughout campus leading some waste to be thrown on the ground.
- The University of Florida is trying to cut down on all waste and this is one way to do it.
Final Thoughts:
This activity was definitely harder than I expected. Typically I don’t spend much time focusing on the
negative things around me but rather the positive. I had to go back through my mind as I vividly imagined
our campus and social environment to see if there were things that I was bothered by. If you don’t take note
of these things, you will likely forget about them.

The best part of this activity was that I was able to think of a lot of solutions to these problems.
Hello Cason!
ReplyDeleteI quite literally laughed out loud when I read your “bug” about Red 1 parking on campus. My experience over the past three years is exceptionally similar; I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve had to drive around campus for an hour or more scavenging for any parking spot I could find. Rather than create more Red parking, the University has made a plethora of Orange available. I should’ve included this “bug” as well!
Moreover, I also resided in Rawlings Hall my first year on campus and I completely understand all of your “bugs” relating to the building. I believe your details regarding the bathrooms, smells, and windows are spot on.
Thank you for sharing! Reading your “bugs” and experiences made me realize many more I could have easily incorporated into my own blog post.

Hello Cason,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post and hearing about your grievances within UF’s campus. The issues that you experienced with your dorm, bike racks, parking issues, dining halls etc. are similarly experienced by most other UF students. It is surprising to me that many of these issues have not been fixed by the university, considering the amount of money they have to work with, and the number of students the changes would affect. Sadly, UF does a poor job of allocating money to the areas of the university that could really use it.
Hi Carson,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your list as it brought me back to many of the specific problems students face when living in a dorm and I could certainly relate to many of those when I was doing so. Apart from those specific ones about Rawlings, a lot of the other problems you brought up with the UF campus in general got me thinking more about them. I never considered the problems with the bike racks/fixing stations, although if I had a bike, those would definitely be things I would consider to be important. All in all, great list, thanks for sharing.
