27A – Reading Reflection No. 3
Inbound Marketing by Brian Halligan
1) In this book, Brian Halligan and co-author Dharmesh Shah talk about a new revolution of marketing. Away with traditional marketing techniques and in with new, internet marketing tips/tricks is the main theme of the book. In a world where "outbound marketing" is becoming less and less effective on consumers, companies must adapt to get ahead of the curve by developing effective "inbound marketing" strategies, i.e. utilizing SEO, social media, PPC ads, and blogs to increase market exposure.
2) I chose to read this book because Professor Pryor mentioned that is was one of the top two books on the list. I was hesitant because it is from 2010, however, I realized when reading it that Pryor learned a lot from its content. This book talks about how to market your company and gain exposure with are the next steps to take with the plan we have for our respective companies. Halligan's instructions on creating blogs have helped me value my experience typing posts like these. Building connections, online and in person, was something the book mentioned in detail which Professor Pryor also talked much about.
3) I would require everyone in this class to start a blog about their business field and work to gain connections through said blog. The book talks much about creating "remarkable content" and this blog is a way to begin gaining standing in your industry, whichever that may be. The goal of the task is to begin finding things your audience is interested in so that you can draw them to your blog and then to your company. It is also a great method of building awareness for your name in your market. For example, the Whole Foods blog is one of the reasons they have become so successful today.
4) I learned how there are many ways you can influence Google's search engine optimization algorithms (SEO) to help get your website out to your market. The tips mentioned in this book were completely foreign to me but were beyond helpful. These tips, like getting link backs from popular channels and getting other blogs to link to your posts, are very helpful. Google is a machine that must be utilized to succeed as a company, so this was fascinating to learn more about.

Hello Cason!
ReplyDeleteI was so close to selecting to read this book after Professor Pryor’s recommendation - and after your reflecting, I’m too intrigued not to! As a marketing major, this was very eye-opening to read and I would love to read more about the theories and statistics behind it.
I also enjoy your activity that you crafted and the example of the Whole Foods blog - I didn’t know that!
Thank you for sharing and great job!

Hi Cason! Great post! I think the book you chose to write about was very interesting! I think it is very true that now a days most marketing is done in some sort of “inbound” sense, which you described to be in the world of social media. I believe most, if not all, people engage in some sort of social media marketing before actually purchasing the product. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Cason!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you chose to read and reflect on this book, because it is one that I haven't read yet. It's interesting to see how this book may have influenced this course in a way without us even realizing it. The idea makes me want to check out the book to see what else I could pull from it. I really liked hearing your thoughts as always, thank you for sharing!
